Lessons Learned
Very early on, a rational discussion of this issue became all but impossible.

Yeah, people tend to react that way when they're attacked out of the blue for no reason other than you don't like them.

If you want a rational discussion, start one.

If you pick a fight and then get your sorry butt kicked, whining about being the injured party only trying to do a public good not only rings hollow, it sounds pathetic, self-serving and untrue.

"First, we had a legal right to post the database. These were public records, legally obtained."

Sure, it was legal. Was it the right thing to do? Was it productive? Should the lists even be legal? I have the the legal right to post this, but is it productive?

Do you believe Christian Trejbal is a douche?

"We also regret that there was not a more compelling public purpose -- beyond illustrating how the Freedom of Information Act works -- behind the decision to post the database."
So the Roanoke Times spends a great deal of time posting a list of permit holders, THEN realizes there isn't really any purpose in posting it?
"Very early on, a rational discussion of this issue became all but impossible."

No anti-gun argument is rational. The right to keep and bear arms is an inalienable right, recognized by the Second Amendment.

One thing most people overlook is that just because the gov't handles information about private citizens doesn't mean that information is public. I wonder how Trejbal would like to have his SSN published. I'll bet he'd throw a screamin' hissy fit!

And Trejbal threw any pretense of rational discussion out the window when he made the comparison between gun owners and sexual predators. That notwithstanding, the outing of CCW holders did not deserve rational discussion. It deserved righteous outrage, and it got it, in spades!

I don't quite understand the second choice and why it's even there.

I bet good money the "NO" vote came from Trejbal's mom or 6th grade teacher.
